For fans, a promotion is the culmination of a season’s work, a chance to celebrate and bask in the achievements made by your team, whoever it may be.

For a manager, the opposite is the case.

Being promoted simply means a new, tougher challenge is just a couple of months around the corner.

Resting on your laurels means losing an advantage and as well as carrying momentum forward you must improve you squad.

Luton Town finished second in League Two with arguably the strongest squad, but that will mean little now they’re moving on up.

With James Collins and Danny Hylton up front, goals were never going to be in short supply, but at the back the odd defensive lapse cost them dear.

Nathan Jones is one of the rising stars of the English game, the new breed of manager sporting his suit in the dug out and the sort of approach that makes the Phil Browns of this world look like dinosaurs.

He was never going to sit back and let others gain an advantage and whilst he strengthened well all over the park, two players in particular will be huge for the Hatters this season.

Matty Pearson is an established right back from Barnsley who will add tough competition for places.

He made 17 Championship appearances for the Tykes and represents exactly the sort of player Luton need to make the step up.

He’s only 24 and has previously been with Accrington, but his presence on the right will complement Dan Potts, the left sided full back for the Hatters. It’s a clever acquisition, one that will bring a degree of balance to their back four.

With captain Scott Cuthbert going, Jones knew he needed a big signing to replace him and he swooped for Plymouth centre back Sonny Bradley.

Bradley was excellent for the Pilgrims last season and they desperately wanted him to remain at the club, offering him a new deal.

Argyle chased a top six finish with Bradley at the heart of everything they did and that alone is evidence enough that he is a real coup for the Hatters.

The likelihood is he’ll partner Alan Sheehan, a Luton stalwart of 96 Football league outings, but boasting 360 in a career spanning Bradford, Leicester and Leeds amongst others.

Sheehan is a composed centre back, comfortable on the ball and perfect foil for the strength and presence of Bradley.

Elsewhere, Luton look as strong as ever, Luke Berry will thrive at a higher level and James Collins is ready to score goals for several seasons yet and loan player Jorge Grant has proven what a class act he can be with Notts County.

With the sort of measured recruitment Jones has displayed so far, Luton Town could well be back in the second tier sooner than fans anticipate.
