Luton Town have confirmed winger Kazenga LuaLua has put pen to paper on a new contract at Kenilworth Road after holding positive discussions with the club.
LuaLua initially turned down the offer of a new deal after helping the club secure League One promotion last season, but he has now changed his mind and committed his future to the Hatters.
The 28-year-old scored three goals in 28 appearances during Luton’s second consecutive promotion-winning campaign, with his pace and trickery making him a firm fans’ favourite at Kenilworth Road.
New Hatters boss Graeme Jones said he was delighted with LuaLua’s decision to stay on at the club, but he stressed the importance of not rushing the winger back to full fitness.
“I am delighted, because he was one of the players that when I initially watched the team from January onwards, I really, really liked. He has got wonderful ability,” Jones told the club website.
“He has now obviously missed three-and-a-half weeks of pre-season and we are going to have to be patient with him. A lot of times through his career – because of his talent – he has been thrown in, going from nought to 100 with nothing in-between. We need to look after Kaz physically for a while – we need to get him a programme that suits where he is now in his career and the age he is at.”
LuaLua initially joined Luton last summer following his release from Sunderland, and he now technically becomes the Hatters’ sixth signing of this summer following Simon Sluga’s arrival at the club on Friday.
This gives the Hatters an enormous boost with the new season fast approaching, as LuaLua was a key figure during last season’s promotion effort.
The feeling of disappointment among Luton fans when he initially turned down a new contract is indicative of his importance to the club, and he will now provide the Hatters with a very unique wing option in the Championship.
This move is also the latest in an excellent summer for the Hatters so far, and they now look like they are assembling a side which will compete well in the Championship.
LuaLua’s pace, skills and power are all very important attributes to have in a Championship side, and I think this is one of their most important signings of the window so far.
