Luton Town have mutually terminated the contract of manager Graeme Jones, the club have confirmed.

A club statement on the official website highlighted the reasoning:

Given the current circumstances affecting not only football but the world as whole, the Club are taking an early move to restructure in order to reduce its cost base and to create efficiencies within the football department.

As a result of amicable discussions, Graeme and the board of directors have agreed terms upon which he will leave his role with immediate effect.

The board would like to place on record their thanks to Graeme for his efforts over the last twelve months. We wish him and his family well during these difficult times for everyone, and in his future career.

Assistant manager Gary Brabin, first-team coach Inigo Idiakez and technical goalkeeping coach Imanol Etxeberria have also had their contracts terminated with immediate effect. We would like to thank all three for their service to the club and wish them all well for the future.

Jones leaves the Hatters situated 23rd position in the Sky Bet Championship table, after a testing tenure in charge of the club after he took over from Mick Harford before the start of the season.

Luton have been battling in the lower echelons of the league table for the majority of the season, and despite Jones' best efforts the club have felt it is the right time to make a change.

The club sit six points adrift from safety with nine games left to play, and are looking on course for an immediate return to the third tier, after what was such an impressive 2018/19 season where they won the League One title.

Understandably, the clamour to get a new manager through the door at Kenilworth Road is not a top priority at it stands amid the current global situation.
