Luton Town are closing in on the signing of defender Marc Wilson, TEAMtalk have reported.

Wilson spent last season with Bolton Wanderers, making 18 appearances in all competitions as the crisis-hit club were relegated from the Championship.

The defender is now a free agent however, after his contract with the Lancashire based club expired at the end of last season, and it seems there is plenty of interest in the former Republic of Ireland international.

According to the latest report, Wilson has become a target for a number of Championship clubs, but it is thought that Luton are closest to signing the 31-year-old.

Wilson previously spent a brief spell at Kenilworth Road in 2007, making four appearances for The Hatters before his move was cut short when the club entered administration.

If confirmed, Wilson could become Luton's sixth signing of the summer, with Martin Cranie, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Callum McManaman, Brendan Galloway and Simon Sluga having all already joined the club, while Kazenga LuaLua has also returned to Kenilworth Road after initially declining a new contract offered by the club.

The Verdict

I think this could be a good move for Luton.

Wilson may not have been a regular feature for a Bolton side that plummeted out of the league last season, but I could still see him being useful for The Hatters.

Graeme Jones' side will see Championship survival as a success this season, and Wilson's experience at this level could prove a valuable asset in helping them to find their feet in the division this season.

With a number of clubs interested in Wilson, it does seem as though there are plenty who think the Irishman still has something to offer at this level, and while his status as a free agent means this doesn't have to get done before the close of the transfer window on Thursday, that interest from elsewhere means Luton will still want to get this done as quickly as possible.
