As football made its return last weekend, so did Luton Town centre-back Tom Lockyer, as he gained valuable minutes during Hatters Development squad victory over Charlton Athletic.

An injury picked up in February 2021, and subsequent ankle surgery in April has meant Wales international Lockyer, 26, has been out of action for the past five months.

However, in a line-up that will have undoubtedly drawn smiles across many Hatters fans, Lockyer's name was back on a Luton Town team sheet against his former club on Saturday.

And his return was evidently welcome, as in a squad that contained a blend of youth and seniority, it was the Hatters who ran out as comfortable 4-0 winners over the Addicks.

Speaking on Lockyer's participation, Development Coach Adrian Forbes said: "Tom needed to get some minutes in the tank, so to speak, and he was excellent on and off the pitch.

"He needs some more fitness to get back in the first-team mix but it was a pleasure to have him with us, he was brilliant with the lads."

Speaking on the match, Forbes confessed: "I was happy with the all-round performance, the shape was really good and we were a real attacking threat, which we have been in the last few matches."

Starting XI: Horlick; Jones, Lockyer, Moloney, Williams; Beckwith (C), Newton, Lawless; McJannet (x2), Addy (x1), Pereira (x1).

Substitutes: Pettit, Nicolson, Stevens, Francis-Clarke, Taylor, Tompkins

The Verdict

Lockyer amassed a total of 20 Championship appearances last season, before picking up his injury.

And despite being injured, Lockyer was even selected as part of Wales' 2020 European Championships squad, thus highlighting how highly regarded the 26-year-old is.

And as Luton Town look to build upon their highly encouraging 2020/21 season, the eventual return of Lockyer could be vital if the Hatters want to break into the top half of the Championship, and perhaps even make an assault on the top six.
