Luton Town have joined Carlisle United in the race to sign Newcastle United’s Alex Gilliead, according to the News & Star.
The player has been the subject of interest from Keith Curle earlier this summer after he had a successful loan spell in Cumbria last season, scoring five and setting up six in his 35 League Two games as Carlisle finished 10th place.
However, the latest news is promotion favourites Luton are now favourites to land the player, who is looking for another loan spell.
Whilst he is likely to be involved with the Magpies’ Under-23’s throughout the season if he were to stay, moving to the lower leagues may benefit him more, so he could be convinced to move out again.
The 20-year-old has already played once for Newcastle’s Under-23 side in Premier League 2, claiming an assist in the 3-1 defeat to West Ham.
During his time at Brunton Park last season, Gilliead was utilised mainly as a right-winger, where he was most successful. However, he can also play on the left hand side and as a central striker.
Luton sit second in League Two, just two points behind early pace setters Morecambe, whilst Carlisle are in sixth place on nine points.
