Sunderland progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, as they narrowly beat Sheffield United 1-0 at Bramall Lane.

Max Power scored the only goal of the game after nine minutes, after Chris Wilder's side failed to clear the ball from a corner.

Jack Ross' men held on to take the win, and they'll be keen to build on this impressive showing as the 2019/20 campaign progresses.

Sunderland's Luke O'Nien took to Twitter following the win to praise his team-mates on the win, whilst also thanking the supporters who were in fine voice throughout the game.

Sunderland have been drawn against Oxford United in the next round of the competition, in what will be a tough test for Jack Ross' side, after the League One side thrashed West Ham United 4-0 on Wednesday.

But Ross will be keen to keep his players grounded ahead of that one, as they switch their attentions back to their league campaign.

Sunderland narrowly missed out on promotion back into the Championship last season, after being beaten in the play-off final at Wembley against Charlton Athletic.

O'Nien is likely to be involved at the weekend for the Black Cats when they take on MK Dons at the Stadium of Light, in what could potentially be a tricky test for Ross' side.

The Verdict:

What a win this was for Sunderland.

They deserved the victory as Sheffield United weren't good enough, and they'll fancy their chances after being drawn against Oxford United in the next round of the competition.

They'll be hoping that this doesn't impact their promotion bid though, as that simply has to be Jack Ross' priority this season as they look to return to the Championship.
