Luke O’Nien shares message as he reflects on Sunderland’s latest triumph

Sunderland midfielder Luke O’Nien has taken to Instagram to reflect on his side’s recent victory over Queens Park Rangers in the League Cup.

Despite entering this clash as underdogs, the Black Cats managed to book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition by defeating the Hoops in a penalty shoot-out.

QPR had a goal ruled out for offside in the second-half of the fixture before Aiden McGeady was denied a late winner by goalkeeper Seny Dieng.

Whilst Ilias Chair, Yoann Barbet and Charlie Austin all missed from the spot for QPR, McGeady, Ross Stewart and Alex Pritchard scored for Sunderland as they sealed victory at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Lee Johnson’s side will discover who they will play in the next round of the League Cup on Saturday when the draw is made at 10:30am on Soccer AM.

Set to face Rotherham United this weekend, Sunderland could potentially move into the automatic promotion places in League One if they pick up all three points at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Ahead of this fixture, O’Nien has taken to Instagram to share a message about the Black Cats’ recent victory over QPR.

The Verdict

Having helped his side beat QPR by featuring in this particular clash, O’Nien will now be determined to help Sunderland secure some positive results in the third-tier in the coming months.

A stand-out performer for the Black Cats in League One this season, the midfielder is currently averaging an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.17 at this level.

When you consider that O’Nien has made 122 appearances in the third-tier during his career to date, he will fancy his chances of helping Sunderland reach new heights in this division in the not too distant future.

If the Black Cats are able to beat Rotherham on Saturday, they could use the momentum gained from this result to push on under the guidance of Johnson in November.
