Sunderland finally got their hands on some silverware at Wembley on Sunday afternoon, defeating Tranmere Rovers in the Papa John’s Trophy final.
The Black Cats secured a 1-0 win in the capital, courtesy of Lynden Gooch’s second-half strike on 57 minutes.
One player who impressed for Lee Johnson’s side, though, was Luke O’Nien, who continues to earn rave reviews.

The versatile midfielder has been operating in the heart of defence for large parts of this season, and produced a solid display alongside Tom Flanagan to nullify the likes of David Nugent and Danny Lloyd.
O’Nien picked up the man-of-the-match award after another impressive performance, and was quick to take to Instagram to say that lifting a trophy at Wembley are “what dreams are made of”.

O’Nien will now be hoping that their Papa John’s Trophy final win can give them extra motivation to push for promotion and return to the Championship.
What a player O’Nien is proving to be. Wherever you play him, he will wear his heart on his sleeve and give his all.
It was a big win for Sunderland as they have suffered heartbreak against Portsmouth and Charlton at Wembley in recent years, so it’s a great achievement for Lee Johnson and his side.
That will now give them extra motivation to go on and win promotion, and this should give them confidence and belief going forward.
