Sunderland will be hoping that they are given the chance to fire themselves into the play-offs before this year's campaign reaches a conclusion.

Phil Parkinson's side are currently sat seventh in the League One standings, but are just three points adrift of the automatic promotion places with nine matches remaining in this year's campaign.

Championship clubs have started to return to training this week, but that hasn't been the case for League One, with the future of the 2019/20 season hanging in the balance.

Clubs in the third tier are set to vote on how they would like the season to reach a conclusion, with the prospect of final standings being determined on a PPG basis (points per game).

If this year's campaign was to be concluded on a PPG basis, then it would mean that Sunderland would miss out on promotion back into the Championship this season, which would be hugely frustrating.

One player that has been a regular in the Sunderland team this season is Luke O'Nien, with the 25-year-old making 43 appearances across all competitions for the Black Cats.

/CAqcEKrnX_O/">O'Nien recently took to Instagram to reveal that he is keen for football to return soon for Sunderland, which is a statement that plenty of the club's supporters are likely to agree with at this moment in time.

O'Nien is out-of-contract in the summer of 2020, and it remains to be seen as to whether the club are going to offer him a new deal at this moment in time, whilst uncertainty over the season remains in place.

The Verdict:

I'm sure plenty of Sunderland fans will agree with O'Nien here.

Sunderland haven't shown the consistency they needed to fire themselves into the top-two this season, which will be frustrating to see for the club's supporters.

However, I don't agree that finishing a season on a PPG basis would be the right way forward for League One, as some teams that are chasing for promotion are yet to play teams in the bottom-half of the third tier standings.

Therefore, it's not exactly a fair reflection on how the season should reach a conclusion.
