Luke Freeman admits he prefers playing in more of a central attacking midfield role - but will play anywhere if it means stepping out onto the field for Nottingham Forest.

It has been a frustrating campaign for Freeman, who joined Forest on a season-long loan deal from Sheffield United in the summer.

The 28-year-old has endured a difficult time with injury, and missed nearly two months of the season due to a hernia injury which required specialist surgery in Germany.

Freeman has recently revealed that he had the wrong surgery on an injury back in pre-season, but has been reintroduced to the side of late, featuring in six of Forest's last eight league games and starting in four of those.

Freeman has been utilised as a left-sided winger in Chris Hughton's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, but has previously played as a number 10 and on the opposite flank.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Forest's trip to Watford this weekend, Freeman told FLW that he does prefer playing in more of a central role, but is happy to play wherever if it means getting regular minutes.

He said: "I think I probably prefer playing centrally, but on the other side of that, I am very happy to play anywhere in that attacking formation.

"I'm used to playing anywhere really, in three or four different positions. If I'm changed around, it comes quite natural to me.

"If you ask me where I prefer, it's in that central role, but I'm more than happy to play on the left or the right if needs be."

The Verdict

You have to feel for Freeman. He's a quality player at this level but he has been somewhat unable to show his true ability due to injury problems.

It's almost unheard of for a player to undergo the wrong surgery, but he feels like he's past that now and is fully fit and raring to go.

To have a player of his versatility and ability in the squad can only be beneficial for Forest and for Hughton, with a lot of games still left to play and a large amount of points to pick up.
