Jos Luhukay has remained coy on Keiren Westwood’s future when the Sheffield Wednesday boss was quizzed on the goalkeeper.

Last Saturday, Luhukay opted to play Cameron Dawson in goal during Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat to Wigan Athletic, with Joe Wildsmith named on the bench as back-up.

That left Westwood, who is fit again after missing large parts of last season, as third choice, leading to further speculation surrounding the goalkeeper’s future.

Late last month, the 33-year-old was reportedly attracting Premier League interest, but at this stage of Deadline Day, he remains a Wednesday player.

When quizzed on the goalkeeper today, Luhukay told Dom Howson from the Sheffield Star: “Everyone knows the decision that we have made and the goalkeepers know that. I have not changed that (my opinion).”

Over the course of his four years at Hillsborough, Westwood has made 143 Championship appearances for the Owls, playing a crucial role in helping the club reach the play-offs in 2016 and 2017.

Under Carlos Carvalhal, he was first choice, but is yet to feature under Luhukay, who turned to Dawson and Wildsmith last season whilst Westwood was injured.

The former has started the new season in possession of the gloves, with it seemingly likely that Dawson will retain his place in the starting XI this weekend against Hull City.

The Verdict

Luhukay isn’t giving much away on Westwood’s future here.

It’s clear that the goalkeeper isn’t going to be featuring much this season, with faith firmly placed in Dawson and Wildsmith.

Westwood is too good to be sitting in the background at Hillsborough, and should a move, either permanently today, or on-loan over the course of the next month, present itself, we could well see Westwood depart.
