Jos Luhukay has revealed that striker Sam Winnall is not currently training with the first team as he battles injury.

Howson has tweeted that the 27-year old currently 'can’t train with the team for two to three weeks' because of a calf injury. He's only started 11 league games for the Owls since his move from Barnsley in January 2017.

He fell out of favour last season and spent time on loan at Derby, where he scored six times in 17 Championship fixtures, although only six of those were starts.

Winnall hasn't played yet for Luhukay's side this season, but as the wafer-thin squad is tested to the extreme, his fitness will be monitored closely.

The Owls had a tough summer in which they were unable to sign new players, leaving them with a weaker squad than last season. Jordan Rhodes departure has pushed Winnall a little further up the pecking order, once he returns to match fitness.

The Verdict

This might be news, but I'm not sure Winnall would be near the first team if he was fit. There's a difference between training with them and being involved.

With Gary Hooper nearing fitness and cult-hero Atdhe Nuhiu currently leading the line, Winnall will have to work hard to prove his worth.
