Jos Luhukay has revealed that Sheffield Wednesday are positive over Fernando Forestieri’s return, claiming they are trying to bring him closer to a first-team return.

Speaking to Sheffield Wednesday’s official Twitter account (@swfc), Luhukay has indicated that Forestieri is close to a return, having missed large parts of the season through injury.

Forestieri picked up a knee injury earlier in the season, which has ruled him out of action for a considerable period.

The Owls have been without Forestieri since August, with the playmaker limited to just three appearances in blue and white this season.

However, the influential Italian appears to be edging closer to a return before the end of the season.

Forestieri, who played a key role in helping the Owls to the play-offs over the last two years, will return to a side enduring a disappointing campaign.

Luhukay’s side currently sit 17th in the Championship table, and rather than looking up the table, the Owls are looking over their shoulder, as they face the possibility of a relegation fight.

The Owls are just seven points clear of the relegation zone heading into the final 12 fixtures of the season.

The Verdict

Forestieri has been missed at Hillsborough this season, and if he returns before the end of the campaign, it will be a huge boost for the Owls.

Nobody could’ve imagined how much Wednesday would miss the 28-year-old, but they have lacked quality in the final third without him.

Even without Forestieri, Wednesday might have too much to be considered relegation contenders, however, should he return, the Owls will start to look up the Championship table.
