Ross Wallace will be leaving the club at the end of the season after three fruitful years at Sheffield Wednesday.

The 32-year-old was heavily involved in Sheffield Wednesday's promotion pushes over the last two seasons, but injuries have hindered him this season as well as his form just generally decreasing.

Jos Luhukay needs to make his mark on the team as well as the wage budget needing to be reduced, so Wallace's age was always going to count against him in regards to his contract situation.

This is what Luhukay had to say about the decision in his pre-match press conference as quoted by The Star: "It is not an easy decision, he made in my time very positive performances for me but we have a lot of older players in the team and we must make decisions and sometimes the decisions are hard. It was a difficult decision."

"We know what he can do but we must also look to the future and the future is not for Ross at this age. We must look for players at the age of 18-22/23 so that's why we made the decision."

The Verdict

Wallace's contract was coming to an end and he hasn't shown enough to suggest that he should be given a new one. However, the positive impact that he had in his limited time at the club should be acknowledged because he played a key role in the last two seasons where Wednesday came desperately close to getting promoted.

His standout performances have to be the play-off semi-finals against Brighton where he scored in both legs in order to take Wednesday to the final before Hull defeated them.
