Charlton Athletic made a point on their social media pages before the match on Saturday afternoon with Wigan that this game was where their season really got going.

After getting through the opening set of fixtures before having to pause because of the international break with a squad that was threadbare at best, Saturday saw the Addicks put out a new-look team that had been strengthened in several areas.

Indeed, many noted the depth that the club suddenly had after a late flurry of signings aided by Thomas Sandgaard in the transfer market and four made their full debuts, whilst Omar Bogle came on in the second half for his first appearance in Charlton red.

Among the four full debutants, though, it was perhaps Ryan Inniss that stood out most of all on his first appearance for the club.

Whilst Andrew Shinne, Chris Gunter and Paul Smyth all did well and had decent first bows, Inniss offered a glimpse of why, despite being a low-key signing, he could be an important figure this season judging by his stats against the Latics (taken from whoscored.)

At nearly 2m tall, Inniss is an imposing figure and showed that he knows how to use his frame during the clash with Wigan.

He won seven aerial duels in the contest, bettered only by Akin Famewo with ten, another centre-half signing appearing to do well, whilst also taking a whack on the nose for his troubles and continuing.

In terms of clearances, the former Crystal Palace man topped the charts for Charlton with six, regularly reading the game well and proving hard for Wigan's attackers to get around.

With it at his feet, he looked composed but he was never afraid to send it up the pitch when needed and, when he did go direct, they were usually accurate passes.

He made the most accurate long passes of any outfield player for Charlton with six, and this not only helped alleviate pressure on the Charlton defence but also helped turn the Addicks around and up the pitch.

You wouldn't describe Charlton as a long-ball team by any stretch, but with Inniss it looks as though they have a player that can help mix things up which, when looking to make quick transitions on the break, could be crucial.

With Jason Pearce out with injury still, and Deji Oshilaja picking up a recent knock, Charlton obviously needed to add defensively and, with Inniss now joining Famewo at the back, it looks as though cover has certainly been found.
