Wigan have endured a very tough season in the Championship, with Paul Cook's side only three points above the relegation battle and firmly in the scrap for survival.

Many would argue the reason for that is quite simple, the players the ex-Portsmouth boss has just aren't good enough to be higher up the table.

One of the players to struggle in the current campaign has been Callum McManaman, who returned to the Latics from Sunderland in the summer.

The 27-year-old had been at the club for eight years earlier in his career and was understandably a hero for the role he played in the famous FA Cup win, which included a man of the match display in the final.

Therefore, it was no surprise to see his return was greeted extremely positively by the supporters.

However, Wigan weren't getting the McManaman back that they remembered and loved for his ability to run with the ball and to terrorise defenders.

The winger had struggled after moving to West Brom and a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday was equally uninspiring, before a move to Sunderland also didn't work out and resulted in relegation to League One.

And, unfortunately for Wigan, McManaman is now struggling to make an impact with them too.

He has made just 19 appearances, scoring only once and appears to be way down the pecking order under Cook, who doesn't seem to trust him.

Wigan fans will always have the great memories that McManaman provided them with and that cup win, but the fairytale return just hasn't worked out up to now.
