Rafael Cabral was the saviour for Reading last night at Wycombe as his two shootout saves sent the Royals into the second round of the Carabao Cup.

In what was a lively game, Wycombe took the lead early in the second-half after Alex Samuel headed home from a poorly defended corner. Reading hit back soon after as new signing George Puscas opened his account for the club.

It ended one apiece, leaving the tie to be decided by penalties. Rafael saved from both Nick Freeman and Fred Onyedinma before Danny Loader stepped up to clinch the tie for the Royals.

Rafael signed for the Berkshire outfit last Wednesday on a free transfer after having his contract mutually terminated by former club Sampdoria. The 29-year-old has also played for Napoli, as well as making three international appearances for Brazil.

He was signed by Reading after loanee keeper, Joao Virginia, didn't look comfortable between the sticks in the opening fixtures against both Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City. It's yet to be seen how much of an improvement Rafael could be on Virginia, but he showed glimpses of his quality last night.
