‘Love him already’ – Plenty of Birmingham fans excited as summer signing’s Aston Villa comments emerge

New Birmingham City arrival Ryan Woods snubbed Aston Villa early on his youth career, which has excited plenty of Blues fans.

Birmingham announced yesterday that the 27-year-old would join on a three-year deal on the 1st of July, becoming the first signing of the summer and the first of Lee Bowyer’s tenure as manager.

Woods has spent the last season and a half on loan from Stoke City at Millwall, where he has been a regular fixture under former Blues boss Gary Rowett.

The experienced Championship campaigner has more than 200 appearances in the second tier under his belt in the six years since he swapped Shrewsbury Town for Brentford.

Woods came through the Walsall youth system before joining the Shrews but also has history with Birmingham’s Second City rivals, having snubbed Villa as a child.

In an interview with LondonNewsOnline last year, the midfielder discussed why the Villa Park outfit weren’t for him and how he ensured he could leave the club.

He explained: “I went there at 10 or 11 and I just didn’t enjoy it.

“I grew up as a village kid and it was quite rough. They [Villa] weren’t really my type of people.

“I said to my dad: ‘If you make me go, I’ll train badly so they don’t take me on anyway’. I never went

“Dad said: ‘Fair play to you, you know what you want’. Even at that age I knew it wasn’t going to be for me. I went and enjoyed my football with my friends again at the weekend.

“I signed at Walsall until I was 15 and they released me, because they felt I was too small.

“I went to Shrewsbury a few days later and had a trial game at right-back – didn’t impress. I told them: ‘ I’m not a right-back, I play centre midfield’. I went back for another trial in midfield and I signed the next day.”

What was the score the last time Birmingham City played each of these 25 teams?

Those quotes have resurfaced after Woods’ move to St Andrew’s was confirmed yesterday and, unsurprisingly, have caused a stir among Blues supporters.

Plenty of them have taken to Twitter to voice their excitement…
