Sunderland have announce their retained list for next season, as the Black Cats prepare for another season in League One.

Jack Ross' side suffered a crushing defeat in the League One play-off final, with Patrick Bauer scoring a last-minute winner for Charlton to seal their promotion to the Championship.

This left the Black Cats facing a second season in the third tier, and they have launched their preparations by confirming their retained list for the upcoming season.

The announcement has seen the club confirm that senior players Adam Matthews, Luke Molyneux, Max Stryjek and Robbin Ruiter will all leave the Stadium of Light this summer.

Under-23 players Max Johnstone, Connor Shields and Alex Storey are also leaving the club after not seeing their contracts extended.

Sunderland made the announcement via their Twitter page on Tuesday afternoon:

Many Black Cats fans responded by offering their views on those who have been kept on and released, with some feeling that those moved on deserved more of a chance.
