Aston Villa failed to capitalise on an opportunity to move back into the automatic promotion places last night, with Steve Bruce’s side held at Villa Park by Preston North End.

Lewis Grabban’s first goal for Villa, from the penalty spot, rescued a point for Bruce’s side, who had found themselves trailing to Tom Barkhuizen’s first-half goal.

Bruce’s side are now winless in their last two Championship fixtures following last night’s 1-1 draw, which has left them trailing Cardiff City by a single point, although the Bluebirds have a game in hand over their rivals.

It was a difficult evening at Villa Park, with nerves kicking in as the Championship’s promotion race picks up pace during the final third of the season.

Villa’s supporters were critical of Bruce’s side, however, Grabban was a shining light, with the 30-year-old stepping off the bench to have a positive impact and rescue a point for his new side.
