Portsmouth have swooped to sign Jordy Hiwula on a short-term contract.

Kenny Jackett’s side are looking to establish themselves in the League One play-off race this season, but have had a stuttering start.

On three occasions in just seven fixtures, they’ve failed to score a goal. That’s led them to Hiwula, whose arrival has now been confirmed.

Our writers discuss the striker's arrival at Fratton Park…

You can understand their thinking behind this one.

Portsmouth could certainly benefit from signing another striking option this term, as competitions for places is never a bad thing in a squad that are likely to be challenging for promotion.

Hiwula has shown that he knows where the back of the net is in League One, having scored for Coventry City over the years in the third-tier.

If he can get back to his best this season, then he could be the ideal striker to have challenging for a starting spot in Kenny Jackett's side.

On a free-transfer as well, it's a shrewd move by Pompey, as it's a deal that won't cost them a considerable amount of money.

It's a deal that makes sense for both parties involved as well, as Hiwula will be eager to prove himself at this level once again.

I like this move from Pompey, I really do.

Kenny Jackett's side haven't had the start of the season they will have been hoping for by they aren't far off the top sides in the table and the arrival of Hiwula could be just the boost they need to help them climb up League One.

Pompey have got some strong striking options already but the 26-year-old should add something slightly different and his pace could be a really useful weapon as the season wears on.

Hiwula has scored goals at this level before and provides the South Coast side with a little bit more quality.

Picking him up as a free agent looks a great bit of business, Jackett now needs to get him firing.

Portsmouth quiz: Are these 10 facts about Fratton Park true or false?

On a free transfer, this is a terrific signing for Portsmouth.

Last season obviously turned out to be a difficult campaign for Hiwula, but prior to that, he'd been one of the standout players in the third-tier.

Hiwula has a proven goal-scoring record at this level, and if Portsmouth finally want to climb out of League One, then this is a major step in the right direction.

Kenny Jackett already has a host of talented players at Fratton Park, and the signing of the former Coventry City man will only improve his attacking options.
