Derby County have endured an indifferent start to the new season, with a win, a draw, and a defeat, failing to provide any indication as to how well Gary Rowett’s men will get on this year.

The Rams have suffered from key departures in the summer months, with Tom Ince and Will Hughes upping sticks and moving to the Premier League, and Rowett has worked hard to find suitable replacements for his star men.

Former Ipswich loanee Tom Lawrence joined in an initial £5 million deal earlier this week, but it remains clear that Rowett is still a striker short, with the goals of Tom Ince needing to be replaced before the transfer window slams shut.

Young Southampton forward Sam Gallagher enjoyed a wonderful year on loan in the division with Blackburn last year, and although the Lancashire side were relegated, the big striker’s personal stats were impressive.

11 goals in 42 league outings brought the Crediton-born man to the attentions of the Football League, and parent club Southampton appeared keen to keep hold of their promising youngster, ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

However, Gallagher’s top flight opportunities may be limited, and a move to the second tier may be exactly what the player needs right now.

The Rams have Chris Martin back from a loan spell, as well as David Nugent and Darren Bent in their ranks, but the addition of a young, hungry striker, is exactly what Rowett’s squad needs.

Derby are a far superior outfit to the Blackburn side that suffered relegation last term, and with the service on offer at Pride Park, Gallagher would surely thrive.

Rowett wants to add more goals to his team, and this man is exactly the player the Rams need if they are to increase their output.
