Derby County are in the final play-off position with three games to go and once again they had Harry Wilson to thank for picking up three points.

The on-loan Liverpool man has been a standout performer for the Rams and his stoppage time brace against QPR on Easter Monday could be vital in their pursuit of Premier League football.

Frank Lampard has used connections at top-flight clubs to bring in several promising youngsters and they’ve all made a massive difference.

Fikayo Tomori was crowned as Derby’s Player of the Season and fellow Chelsea loanee Mason Mount has excelled in midfield.

They will be delighted to see how Lampard’s guidance has helped their players, as Liverpool will be with Wilson.

The Wales international has always been highly regarded and his productive second half of the season at Hull in the last campaign caught attention.

Yet, this was a bigger challenge for the 21-year-old, who would be joining a bigger club with expectations of promotion.

For Liverpool, that’s ideal. Every game you play for them is high-pressure and Jürgen Klopp has transformed the mentality so that the target is to win every fixture.

Therefore, Wilson showing he can cope on a smaller scale will be pleasing key figures at Anfield.

As mentioned, he was the man to step up for the huge pressure penalty at Pride Park against the R’s and he comfortably dispatched it before scoring with virtually the last kick of the game to seal the points.

That took his tally to 14 goals for the season, an outstanding return for someone who isn’t a striker.

The unfortunate thing from Derby’s perspective is that Wilson’s form will mean that he won’t be playing in the Championship again next season and their only chance of getting him back on a temporary basis is if they win promotion.

But, in the bigger picture, the top Premier League sides will be delighted to see how playing for Derby can help their younger players.

When Wilson returns to Merseyside in pre-season he will be at a much higher level, so this is a loan that has worked out extremely well for all parties.
