Middlesbrough came within 90 minutes of Premier League football last year, losing to Norwich in the Championship play-off final. Despite having the best defence in the division, the Teesside club struggled in front of goal scoring 30 goals less than league champions AFC Bournemouth.
After the capture of Stewart Downing, Boro boss Aitor Karanka will be keen to bolster his attacking options with some more new signings.
However it is understood that Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert is not on Karanka’s summer wish list.
The England international, who netted 31 times for Southampton in the Championship, was rumoured to be flying home early from Liverpool’s pre-season tour in Australian for a medical on Teesside.
However, as reported by the Gazette, senior officials at the club denied this rumour, despite many bookmakers penning Middlesbrough as clear favourites for the 33-year-old.
With Lambert seemingly ruled out, Karanka will turn his attention elsewhere, with the club apparently eager to bring Patrick Bamford back to the club following his omission from Jose Mourinho’s pre-season plans.
The 21-year-old, who won Championship Player Of The Year, was exceptional during his time at the Riverside Stadium, so Boro fans would no doubt love to see the return of the talented striker ahead of the new season.
