Liverpool have opened discussions over a move for Stoke City star Xherdan Shaqiri, according to a report by The Telegraph.

Shaqiri has a relegation release clause of £13m, as per this report, which Liverpool are prepared to meet in order to land their man.

The Switzerland international's future is expected to be resolved shortly as he returns after an impressive World Cup.

The left-footed winger scored one goal and grabbed one assist for his country as they reached the knockout stages in Russia.

After scoring eight goals and laying on seven more for team-mates last year, Shaqiri caught the eye despite Stoke's relegation.

The 26-year-old is keen to remain in the Premier League and he is not short of potential suitors, which has sparked Liverpool into action as they look to get this deal over the line.

Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham United are among the teams to have been linked with Shaqiri during this transfer window.

But Jurgen Klopp is looking to steal a march on his rivals and has entered into discussions over bringing Shaqiri to Anfield.

The Verdict

Shaqiri has a decision to make: would he be content being a bit-part player at Liverpool competing for silverware or would he rather play a starring role in a mid-table side?

At Liverpool, he is going to play second fiddle to their regular starters like Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, but he is a useful option for the Merseyside outfit off the bench.

At a team like Everton or Crystal Palace, he is likely to be handed regular starts and his role would be similar to the one he has had at Stoke.
