Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg looks to be on his way back to the Championship this season, with both Blackburn and Burnley having been plotting moves to sign him.

Now, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon account, it is Rovers who are in front in the transfer race for the player. It seems as though a transfer for the player could soon be completed and he would join the side on a deal until the end of the season.

He spent the last campaign on loan with Preston and continued to impress in their backline, having played there the season previously.

He managed a total of 61 appearances in the league during his time at Deepdale and in the last campaign in particular, became a key player. The club would have wanted to sign the player again but it looked as though he wanted to back to Liverpool to try and get in the squad as a rotation option.

However, with the Reds having a squad packed full of talent, it appears as though he will be allowed out on loan yet. There might not be playing time for van den Berg at Anfield and it means another transfer move to the Championship could happen this window.

Now, it's Blackburn who look to be adding the player to their ranks, with the club having been able to offer the defender more chance of first-team football. With Burnley also interested, it looks like he may now snub a move to Turf Moor and opt for Ewood Park and Rovers this season.

The Verdict

Sepp van den Berg is an excellent player at Championship level, as he has proven during his time with Preston.

He played a key role for the club during his time at Deepdale and became one of the first names on the teamsheet for the side. He was solid, a reliable face in their defence and looked like he could have had games in the Premier League too. It seemed like perhaps a transfer to somewhere bigger would happen this transfer window.

Now, it's the Championship that could see van den Berg playing in it again, with both Burnley and Blackburn wanting to sign him. If it's Blackburn who do manage to seal a deal for the player, then it would be an excellent piece of business by manager Jon Dahl Tomasson and the club would have a really good option in defence.

As for Burnley, they already have plenty of talent in their squad - but van den Berg would have really cemented them as title favourites for the season.
