Sheffield United look set to beat Aston Villa to the signature of Liverpool starlet Ben Woodburn, according to Daily Telegraph reporter John Percy.

Villa had been linked with a swoop for the 18-year old winger, but Chris Wilder's side have now moved into pole position. He reportedly having a medical at Bramall Lane today with a view to a season-long loan deal.

Woodburn joined Liverpool's academy at U7 level and has been with the Merseyside club ever since. He made his Premier League debut in November 2016, as a last minute substitute against Sunderland.

Upon doing so, he became Liverpool's third-youngest debutant of all time at the age of 17 years and 42 days, and the club's second-youngest-ever in the Premier League.

He is also Liverpool's youngest-ever goal scorer, bagging in the EFL Cup quarter final in 2016 against Leeds just three days later. He has since made 11 appearances for Liverpool, seven of which have been in the top flight.

Woodburn has been capped at U17, U17, U19 and U20 level by Wales, as well as winning full international honours in 2017.

The Verdict

The pressure is really on the youngster now. He's had a couple of seasons as the precocious young talent with massive potential, but he's now going to have to prove it on a weekly basis.

The move could be a resounding success, if he is as good as Liverpool think he is then he may well set the Championship on fire. Much depends on how he reacts to regular first team football and whether Chris Wilder can get the best out of him every week.
