Middlesbrough have joined the race for Liverpool's Ryan Kent, according to The Northern Echo.

Kent has previously been targeted by Leeds and Rangers this window, with the latter still said to be keen on him.

Those two clubs have hit a stumbling block with Liverpool however, as the Reds are looking to sell him on a permanent basis, rather than a loan.

Boro, therefore, could face a similar obstacle if they want to bring him to The Riverside, as it is believed they want him on loan. Kent is valued at £12m by Liverpool, so the deal could depend on Woodgate's willingness to add him to the squad and whether Steve Gibson grants his wish.

Following the departure of Stewart Downing, Middlesbrough are in need of a left-winger, and Kent could be what they need. He impressed last year for Rangers, scoring six and assisting six in 23 SPL matches, including a brilliant solo effort against Celtic.

The Verdict

This would be a fantastic signing by Boro, if it's a loan or permanent. They have been crying out for a bit of dynamism and creativity and Kent would provide exactly that. He is the type of player to conjure up the unexpected and that makes a real difference in tight matches.

Liverpool seem determined to hold out for a permanent transfer, and Boro should really consider matching their £12m evaluation. It is a lot of money but at 22 Kent is already a top standard Championship player, and in a few years will surely be playing in the Premier League, so he will repay his fee in performances and potentially profit too.
