Sunderland will not be signing Liverpool forward Liam Millar before the domestic transfer window shuts.

Phil Parkinson has been desperate to strengthen his squad as he looks to build a group that are capable of winning promotion back to the Championship and there had been talk a new striker would arrive.

And, whilst there is still some time for that to happen, Chronicle reporter James Hunter revealed that the Black Cats won't be bringing in the 21-year-old from the Premier League champions, who had been suggested as a target earlier in the window.

"Seen #safc have been linked with a loan move for Liverpool striker Liam Millar, but understand that won't happen."

Millar, who has represented the Canadian national team, is seen as a decent talent by Liverpool but he obviously needs to move to find regular minutes and he has spent the past few years north of the border with Kilmarnock.

Stoke, QPR and Blackburn were among the clubs linked with Millar and it remains to be seen whether he ends up at one of those clubs.

The verdict

This is a shame for Sunderland as Millar is a good prospect and he would have brought something different to the Black Cats' attack in the final third.

But, it's not to be and Parkinson should feel he has enough options to get to January even if an alternative isn't announced today.

Then, this may be something they could revisit as Millar will need to leave Anfield if he wants minutes if he can't secure a transfer now.
