Merseyside rivals, Liverpool and Everton, have both shown an interest in signing Wigan Athletic striker, Joe Gelhardt.
The youngster is just 17-years-old and is under contract until 2021 at the Championship club. It appears Premier League big-hitters Liverpool and Everton are both sniffing around after the striker was called up to the England Under-18 squad ahead of the international break.
Despite the young age, Gelhardt has already experienced senior football during his time at Wigan. He made his debut against Rotherham last season in the Carabao Cup as a 16-year-old. A proud moment for Gelhardt who has been at the Latics since the age of ten.
The youngster has also had a taste of the Championship as he made his league debut last season, coming off the bench when Wigan travelled to Birmingham in April.
He has in even featured this season, as recently as Saturday, when he came on against Barnsley at the DW Stadium in a 0-0 draw.
According to Goal.com, it’s not just Liverpool and Everton who are interested in his services. Chelsea have been said to have sent scouts to watch him last season, and Wolves and Leicester are also on high alert for the striker.
This story could be one with some legs to it. The striker actually played against Liverpool last season in the FA Youth Cup, and impressed despite Wigan failing to come out victorious in the fixture.
It’ll be interesting to see what side he picks if he is to leave. Liverpool recently sold Bobby Duncan to Fiorentina, so there is a gap in the side’s Under-23 squad. It could be a real fight out between the two rivals for Gelhardt’s services.
Having already made appearances at Championship level, it’ll be interesting to see how Paul Cook develops the player over the coming season, and whether Wigan can continue to get the best out of him in regards to his talent.
