Sunderland lost ground in the hunt for an automatic promotion spot last night, drawing 0-0 with Barnsley in a game spoiled by blustery conditions.
It was a tough night for the Black Cats, who knew a win would take them to within a point of Daniel Stendel’s side with a game in hand. Instead, a dour encounter of few chances ended 0-0, leaving the Tykes four points clear.
It was a frustrating night all round, with conditions certainly not helping the flow of the game. Sunderland fans have remarked on Twitter that they feel the tactics are also not helping their side in attack.
Boasting talented players such as Aiden McGeady, the 32-year-old Eire international, they should surely be doing much better than they are.
There’s a train of thought that they’re not killing off games quickly enough and that the talent at their disposal is not being utilised properly.
McGeady was one of the few players to come out of last night with any real credit, but amongst the praise are the question as to whether he’s being used effectively.
Here’s the pick of Sunderland responses from Twitter…
I would change it up like you say push Luke O'nien further forward Matthews back in his right back position Hume left back. I would definitely consider wyke as grigg is so isolated it's ridiculous if mcgeady or Morgan/gooch aren't on it it's hard for grigg

4. Attitude is a huge issue. We have absolutely no swagger, no arrogance & little belief (bar McGeady) that we’re better than anyone else. I feel we’re too respectful to most teams & that lets them get a foot in the game early doors.

Aye fails to get a tune out of them.
In Leadbitter, Cattermole and McGeady we have by far the best 3 midfielders this league has even seen yet JRs tactics are to bypass them and play out from the back 2. 4 pts behind 2nd when we've dropped so many silly points is not good enough

Barnsley result doesnt seem too bad – point away to 2nd place, game in hand, if they slip we need to capitalise
& THATS my worry! We have striker with an ocean between him & mid, others Wyke & loanee.
Rely so much on McGeady, Gooch woeful, others so samey
Gonna be tough#safc

McGeady tonight not his best game ever but second half was good created our best chances so lively ,Barnsley found it hard to keep with him at times so tricky #SAFC

Surprised Mcgeady, Gooch, Morgan, Honeyman havnt linked up well with Grigg so far very frustrating to keep watching cb's boot it length of pitch

It is absolutely Criminal we have players like Mcgeady and Leadbitter in this league, and that is how creative we are. This system is holding our players back, it needs ripping up. #safc

We had a one on one with Max Power just go wide. Should have scored. Catermole missed his shot, Gooch butchered a great chance by not even getting a shot off. Mcgeady was menacing but you defended excellently. The one on target from leadbitter was an excellent save too.
