With Nottingham Forest in the market for a winger to add some attacking bite, the rumours of making a move for Peterborough’s Gwion Edwards are a reason for Forest fans to be cheerful.

The Welsh winger had a fine season at London Road, scoring seven goals and contributing with five assists across all competitions.

Forest struggled to threaten in front of goal last season. A paltry return of 51 goals was never going to be anywhere near enough to push for the top half of the table. The need for Aitor Karanka to reinvigorate his front line is clear.

While Edwards did not dominate the scoring charts, this was at least in part down to a couple of injuries. An ankle injury against Fleetwood, in particular, was limiting; it saw him miss the better part of three and a half months in the middle of the season, limiting his appearances in the season to 26 games. Yet when he was fit, he was a vital cog in The Posh’s machinery.

At just 25, Edwards is entering his prime. With just one year left on his contract, he will be available at a reasonable price. Signing Edwards will not completely solve Forest’s attacking woes – an out and out striker who can be relied on to score 15 goals a season is still required – but he could prove to be an important piece of the puzzle.
