Sunderland beat Grimsby Town 3-2 in the EFL Trophy last night and many fans of the club have heaped praise on Duncan Watmore after the game.

The 25-year-old made his first start of the season after an extended period on the sideline due to injury and scored the Black Cats' first goal of the game.

Grimsby went ahead in the second half through Matt Green but Watmore pulled them level nine minutes later, converting the rebound from George Dobson’s strike.

Sunderland went ahead through Marc McNulty and following a Moses Ogbu equaliser for Grimsby, Will Grigg headed home a late winner.

The victory came just hours after the North East club terminated the contract of manager Jack Ross.

Watmore made his debut in the 2014/15 season but has seen his game time greatly reduced by injury since.

The Winger played just 349 League One minutes for the Black Cats last season and will undoubtedly be hoping that now he is back he can play a much greater role in the upcoming campaign.

Large parts of the Stadium of Light faithful appear excited to see the 25-year-old back playing for their side and many supporters took to Twitter to single him out for praise.
