Claudio Ranieri’s FC Nantes are holding talks with Championship outfit Aston Villa about the re-signing of midfielder Jordan Veretout, according to Get French Football News.
The 24-year-old only moved to Villa Park back in 2015 after a 12-year association with the Ligue 1 club, in which time he came up through the youth ranks and went on to make 143 first team appearances for the side, scoring 15 goals and laying on 23 assists in the process.
And that spell in France earned him a move to Villa, but things just haven’t worked out for the Frenchman in the Midlands, with his 25 Premier League appearances in the 2015/16 campaign yielding no goals, and thus failing to inspire the side to safety.
And last season saw Veretout enjoy a loan spell at Saint-Etienne, scoring four goals in 43 games for the club, and it appears that he could be on his way back to France permanently as reports suggest that Ranieri’s Nantes are holding talks to end the flop’s Villa nightmare this summer.
The former Leicester boss took over at the Ligue 1 outfit earlier this summer just four months after losing his job at the King Power Stadium, despite leading the Foxes to the most unlikely of Premier League titles little under a year earlier.
Nonetheless, he’ll be looking at how his side can bridge the eight-point gap to the European spots next term, and given Veretout’s efforts for the team earlier in his career, he could be the ideal man to add to the squad.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether Nantes can get a deal done for the 24-year-old, but what does seem clear is that Veretout’s disastrous stint at Villa Park will be coming to an end this summer.
