Liam Rosenior provides update on Jason Knight’s Derby County future amid Birmingham City and Burnley interest

Despite the fact that Derby County are now in a better place following their takeover over the summer, due to their relegation to League One, they are still at risk of losing players.

Jason Knight is someone who has been linked with a move away from Pride Park this summer with Football Insider naming both Birmingham City and newly relegated Burnley as interested parties this summer.

The 21-year-old was a regular in the Rams side last year as he made 38 league appearances contributing two goals.

The midfielder also played for his side on Saturday as they beat Oxford United in their first League One game of the season.

However, with the transfer window open until the end of the month, there’s no guarantee of his future at Pride Park.

Nevertheless, Liam Rosenior’s update on the situation will no doubt give Derby fans some encouragement as the manager told Birmingham Live: “The first thing I would say about Jason Knight is I absolutely love him, the club love him, and for him to leave this football club, it’s going to have to take a massive offer.

“We’re not in a position now, as a football club, where in the past we have been the victims of teams seeing our financial position and taking advantage. We’re in a really strong position, thanks to David Clowes, and building something sustainable, and not being in debt.

“So any of our players that anyone is interested in – and I want teams to be interested in our players because it means we are doing a god job – they are going to have to pay. So in Jason’s case, he’s a huge part of my plans, and that goes for all of the young players here that anyone might be interested in – if you want our players, you are going to have to pay maximum price, and that’s the way it’s going to have to continue.

“There’s been no offers. There’s been nothing from club to club, so in terms of speculation, I can’t stop speculation from the media.

“But from my point of view, what’s not in question is Jason’s dedication. He loves this club, and he showed that in his performance on Saturday. And I hope he can stay here as long as possible.”

What year was Derby County founded?

The Verdict:

Whilst this doesn’t secure Knight’s future at Derby, it certainly is a big boost in the fact he may be staying put.

Not only has there been no bids yet, but with the Rams now in a stronger place than they previously had been, they are now in a position to demand more money for their player and a team like Birmingham are probably not in a position to pay much for him.

There is still a threat of Burnley if they did choose to make a move but it’s clear that Rosenior is a big fan of the player and therefore will make teams work hard if they want to take him away from Pride Park.
