Leeds United will be hoping to pick up where they left off when competitive action is to return to the sporting calendar in the UK.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men have won their last five matches in the Championship, which has seen them move to the top of the Championship table.
The Whites now find themselves seven points clear of third-placed Fulham in the second-tier standings with just nine matches remaining in this year’s campaign.
However, it remains to be seen as to whether competitive action will get back underway this season, with clubs reportedly set to vote on whether they want the season to resume, or be concluded via points per game.
One player that has been key to Leeds’ impressive showings this term is club captain Liam Cooper. The central defender has made 30 appearances in all competitions for Bielsa’s side this season, and has formed a strong partnership in the heart of the defence alongside Brighton and Hove Albion loanee Ben White.
Speaking in an interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post, Cooper admitted that he would rather win promotion on the pitch, rather than on a PPG (points per game) basis.
“We want to go and accomplish it ourselves.
“Some may call us mad for that but we want to do it properly and we want to go and finish what we have started. We have come a long way in these last two years and it would be fitting to be able to get that done.”
Cooper went on to reveal that his opinions are shared by the majority of the squad, and insisted that they want to win promotion by getting it done ‘properly’.
“Being the club that we are, it’s not nice when something gets handed to you like that and that’s not the sort of culture we have at the club.
“We don’t expect nobody to give us anything and we have really developed that over the last two years for sure.
“I think I speak for the majority of the lads, they want to play and they want to get it done properly. We don’t want a hand me down, we don’t want none of that, we want to get it done and that’s the way it’s got to be.”
Can you score full marks on this Leeds United quiz?
You can see why they want the season to get back underway.
Leeds have brilliant this season, and fully deserve to win promotion into the Premier League by completing all of their matches in the Championship.
I struggle to see any other team stopping them as they march back towards the top-flight under Marcelo Bielsa’s guidance. It’s good to hear that the Leeds squad are keen to get back playing competitively in the future, as it’s not the best way to win promotion if it is based off of a PPG basis.
