Leeds United captain Liam Cooper has explained how he could've been at the Yorkshire club many years before he actually did make the move.

The centre-back moved to Elland Road in 2014 from Chesterfield for a fee rumoured to be around £500,000.

However, as a youngster, Cooper had the chance to join Leeds but opted instead for Hull City.

Speaking to BBC West Yorkshire Sport he said: “I went for trials at Hull twice – didn't get in, and then managed to get in. I had trials at Leeds – they asked me back. But obviously, being from Hull, I went there.

Leeds fans will certainly be pleased that his journey as a professional has brought him back to the club.

The Scotland youth international has played a key part in the Whites successful start to the season that sees them top the Championship and play Leicester City in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

Thomas Christiansen's men have the joint best goals against record in the division and entertain Ipswich at the weekend.

Cooper will be hopeful of returning to the team having missed last week's defeat to Millwall through injury.

The Verdict

It may have been years in the making, but Leeds and Liam Cooper are a good match now.

The centre-back has impressed this season, stepping into Kyle Bartley's place from last season with real authority.

With Pontus Jansson a doubt, fans will no doubt hope their skipper is back in time for Saturday's clash as they look to maintain their position at the top.
