‘Liability’ – Many Sheffield Wednesday fans react to key moment from midfielder v Birmingham City

A number of Sheffield Wednesday fans have bemoaned the impact that Liam Shaw had on the game during their 1-0 defeat against fellow strugglers Birmingham City with the midfielder receiving a red card for two bookable offences.

The Owls headed into the game looking to recover from their 1-0 defeat at Stoke City in midweek and pick up what would have been a potentially crucial win against one of the sides in and around the relegation zone with them. However, any chance of picking up three points were pretty much ended when they went down to ten men just five minutes into the second period.

Shaw was the Sheffield Wednesday player to be shown that red card, with the 19-year-old sliding in on Maxime Colin whilst he was already on a yellow card. Whilst the second booking might have been a little harsh considering it appeared he got some of the ball, he took a huge risk by going to the ground with such a forceful challenge in that position. That demonstrated his inexperience.

The midfielder has been the subject of a lot of speculation surrounding his future, with a move to Celtic reportedly close to being secured for next season. This kind of incident will do little to win over Sheffield Wednesday fans sceptical over whether he should be a regular starter given he is looking likely to be leaving come the end of the campaign.

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans were quick to bemoan Shaw’s decision-making that led to the red card, while there were one or two suggesting that he should not be starting for them now when he returns from suspension.

Here, we take a look at some of the best reactions on social media…
