Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien could be set for a difficult few months ahead if his move to Blackburn Rovers is halted.

That is according to Alan Nixon via Patreon, who reports that the 24-year-old "faces months of being sidelined" if the EFL prevent his switch to Ewood Park.

Last night, with several clubs interested in his services, it emerged that Blackburn were set to win the race for his temporary signature, with a £10 million obligation to buy if they go on to win promotion this season.

However, no move was confirmed last night, and now it has emerged that Blackburn are currently waiting to hear from the EFL as to whether or not their paperwork for the loan deal is approved.

This comes, Nixon reports, after a delay with checks over whether or not O'Brien had to agree personal terms ahead of a potential permanent summer move.

If the EFL reject the move, it looks set to be a bleak few months ahead for O'Brien, with Nixon claiming that he is no longer a part of Nottingham Forest's Premier League squad, meaning he would be unable to feature for the club in the top flight.

O'Brien made the move to the City Ground in the summer following a brilliant season at Huddersfield Town.

Things have not worked out for the midfielder, though, who has made just six Premier League starts for the Reds so far, the last of which came back in October.

The Verdict

This would be really bad news for Lewis O'Brien.

The fact he is potentially facing months of being unable to play football is a real shame.

No player deserves that and facing such a fate, potentially, due to paperwork not being done correctly just feels very avoidable.

No doubt Blackburn Rovers and O'Brien are both sweating on the EFL's decision this afternoon as they await a judgement from the body.
