We don’t know what division Leeds United will be playing their football in next season, with very few at Elland Road prepared to take their eyes off the race for automatic promotion.

Leeds know what Premier League football would mean for the fanbase, but everyone associated with the club needs to be prepared for any outcome to this season, whether that’s promotion or another year in the Championship.

Reports from Football Insider have recently linked Leeds with a £7m move for John Swift in the summer, suggesting that a few in and around Elland Road already have their eyes on the upcoming transfer window.

Links with Swift for £7m will raise some eyebrows, with the potential transfer-fee something that doesn’t seem to fit right for a player that’s scored just three goals and registered only three assists this season in the Championship for Reading.

To add fuel to those doubts, it is worth remembering the career path the 23-year-old has taken, which is very similar to Lewis Baker, who failed to make any sort of impact at Leeds earlier in the season.

Part of that was down to the success Leeds were having in the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa, but Baker did little to convince in his 11 league outings for Leeds.

And, that spell should serve the Whites a warning when considering a swoop for Swift.

Both started their careers with Chelsea, with the midfield pair highly-rated at an early stage of their time in football. However, limited opportunities at Stamford Bridge led to loan spells elsewhere, with the duo never really settling anywhere.

Whilst Baker is still contracted to Chelsea, Swift is at Reading permanently and he’s built up plenty of experience in the Championship. But he’s still playing at the same level as Baker – who made the move to Reading after Leeds – and his style of play is very similar to his current teammate.

They are both confidence players and the type of personnel who need an arm around them. Of course, Bielsa is exactly the type of head-coach to do that, but Baker’s spell at Leeds should be something the Whites seriously consider before bringing Swift on board, particularly at the quoted price.

It might’ve slipped under the radar due to Leeds’ push for promotion, but if the Whites are still chasing Swift in six weeks, more questions will surely be asked.
