This weekend will see Sunderland begin their new journey under Jack Ross, who is the man tasked with leading the club back through the Football League following relegation to League One.

Sunderland begin their League One campaign against Charlton Athletic this weekend, with the Black Cats moving to make a major announcement ahead of that clash, naming George Honeyman as the club’s new captain.

Honeyman is the first homegrown player to be handed the armband in over a decade, with the 23-year-old set to lead Sunderland’s push for promotion in the Championship next season.

The midfielder has made 53 senior appearances for his boyhood club, with Ross moving to reward Honeyman for his hard work over the course of pre-season.

As expected, such a significant announcement has received plenty of reaction from Sunderland’s supporters.
