After their relegation from the Championship at the end of the 2010/11 season, Sheffield United found themselves in a League One rut.

In three of the next four seasons, they were beaten in the playoffs. It felt as if there was a curse on the Bramall Lane side.

The 2014/15 season saw the Blades bounce back into the top six after a season away under manager Nigel Clough, but once again, they were beaten in the semi-finals this time by Swindon Town.

Having had the majority of the previous season in charge and three transfer windows in which to build his squad, it was decided that Clough was not the man to take the Blades forward.

This is FLW Rewind, where we take a look back at a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document the fall out.

On May 25, 2015, the club announced that they had parted company with the former Derby County man just two weeks after the thrilling second leg of their play-off semi-final defeat to Swindon that finished 5-5 (7-6 on aggregate).

A lot of fans had begun to lose patience with Clough and felt they were not progressing under his stewardship.

As a result, the reaction to the sacking was far from despondent...

But if these fans were expecting things to get better the following season they were badly mistaken.

Nigel Adkins was appointed manager to much jubilation having won promotion three times from League One before.

Having finished 7th and then 5th under Clough, however, Adkins really had to win promotion at the first time of asking or, at the very least, reach the playoffs.

But it all went very badly for the famed promotion master.

The Blades crashed to their lowest league finish since 1983 with a disappointing 11th place finish and eight points off the play-offs.

Adkins was promptly sacked at the culmination of the season whilst Clough was busy celebrating leading Burton Albion to the Championship at the same time, leaving the fans to ponder what could have been.
