The 29-year-old sealed his move to the Eredivisie side on Friday morning after spending pre-season training with the Dutch side following his Swansea departure earlier in the summer.

Fer saw his three-year stay with the Welsh club come to an end in May when it was confirmed he would not be offered an extension to the contract he signed back in 2016.

This came after the midfielder saw his 2018/19 season hampered by injuries, limiting him to just 25 Championship appearances throughout the campaign as Swansea secured a tenth-placed finish.

Fer was appointed club captain by former Swans boss Graham Potter at the start of last season, and the midfielder has now sent a heartfelt message to the club's fans as he makes his next move:

The verdict

Fer was a good servant for Swansea during his three years in South Wales, and this Instagram post suggests he grew a deep affinity for the club during his time there.

The midfielder delivered some excellent performances when he was fully fit last season, but he suffered from injuries too regularly and this held him back significantly.

Therefore, it did not make sense for Swansea to extend his contract for next season. It would have marked much too great of a risk, given Fer's injury record and the Swans' tight financial predicament.

I don't think there can be much doubt that it was the correct time for Swansea to cut ties with the Dutchman.
