Swansea City captain Leroy Fer has given an honest assessment of the past season, one he has described as difficult on a personal level.

The Dutchman has struggled badly with injuries but has admitted on Instagram that seeing the club's young players flourish in the first-team has been very enjoyable.

Posting alongside a slideshow of photographs from the campaign, Fer said: "It was a difficult season for me personally.

"But to see the younger lads develop like the way they’ve done, with the experienced boys leading them, made it one of the most enjoyable ones of my career.

"Still licking wounds and growing from recents years, but I know we’re going to get back where we belong soon."

He also finished by praising the club's fans, dubbing them the 'hear of the Liberty'.

Fer's injuries have meant that he managed to play just six minutes from the club's last 17 matches but he still managed to rack up 25 appearances, a goal and three assists.

Graham Potter guided the Swans to a tenth place finish in an inconsistent first season back in the second tier, but finished just nine points adrift of the play-offs.

The verdict

Fer will have been crucial in what has been a strange but promising year for Swansea.

Inconsistencies have blighted what could have been a top-six campaign but how Potter has reinstalled the slick, passing style that made the Swans famous can only be a massive positive.

Fer's contract is set to run out in a month's time but I would imagine that both player and club will be eager to strike a deal.
