Oxford United manager Michael Appleton is a target for Leicester City this summer as they seek to appoint a new Assistant Manager, according to a report by The Mirror.

Leicester City recently handed the manager's job to Craig Shakespeare on a permanent basis after the former England assistant boss impressed whilst on caretaker duty.

After Claudio Ranieri was sacked last year, Craig Shakespeare's appointment saw an upturn in results as he led Leicester City to the relative safety of mid-table comfort.

The 53-year-old now wants to build up his backroom staff and has identified Michael Appleton as a top target.

The duo worked together at West Bromwich Albion and Appleton is highly rated by Shakespeare.

The 41-year-old has been a success at Oxford United, winning promotion from League Two last season, guiding his side to the brink of play-offs in League One this year and twice finishing runners-up in the EFL Trophy.

The report suggests that Appleton might be tempted by a move to the 2015/16 Premier League winners due to uncertainty over the ownership at Oxford United.

If his future is in doubt at the Kassam Stadium, he might seek the role as Craig Shakespeare's right hand man with the Premier League outfit as Leicester City look to improve on a disappointing 2016/17 title-defending campaign.

Appleton's previous experience involves spells as manager of Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers.
