Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is being tracked ahead of the summer transfer window by Premier League clubs, with both Wolves and Leicester City plotting moves for the Black Cats academy graduate.

That is according to Alan Nixon of The Sun, who claims that the Wearsiders value the 22-year-old at £10 million and could very well cash in should they fail to win promotion to the Premier League at the end of the current campaign.

The Foxes and Wolves both see Patterson as a long-term number one, with Danny Ward failing to impress at the King Power Stadium this season and Jose Sa now 30 years of age at Molineux.

Patterson made his league debut for Sunderland in August 2021 and following a brief spell in the National League on loan at Notts County last season he established himself as the club's first-choice stopper in the final few months under Alex Neil.

He has played in all 29 league matches this season for Sunderland, keeping eight clean sheets and even bagging an assist in December's 3-0 victory over Millwall when his long ball found Ellis Simms in second half stoppage time to round off the win.

The Verdict

Patterson has certainly had a quick rise through the ranks in a short space of time - he took his chance when he got it last season and has not relinquished the number one jersey since then.

There are things he can still get better at in his young age, and as a goalkeeper he has a lot of time left in his career, but he's certainly proving his worth in the Championship in 2022-23.

You can see why he is attracting Premier League interest, especially from Leicester whose goalkeeping situation hasn't been the most convincing since Kasper Schmeichel departed for Nice in the summer.

With Brendan Rodgers dipping into the EFL to sign Harry Souttar in January, you can definitely see him doing the same for Patterson in the summer months, but you could also see Sunderland not wanting to sell either.
