‘Legend’ – These Sunderland fans react to former player’s message

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone has sent a message to supporters about new signing Marc McNulty and many Black Cats fans have been quick to praise the Italian.

Mannone, who currently plays for Minnesota United in the MLS, spent four seasons at the Stadium of Light and made 80 appearances for the North East club.

The 31-year-old left Sunderland to join Reading in 2017 but it seems he is still fond of the Black Cats and he sent an encouraging message to fans after McNulty joined the club on a one-season loan.

Having been at the Royals at the same time as the Scotsman, Mannone congratulated the striker over the move on Twitter and told fans they were “getting a great guy and a top striker”.

The 26-year-old should provide Ross with some well-needed extra firepower ahead of the new season.

The Black Cats have struggled to replace Josh Maja, who left the club in January, with forwards Greg Wyke and Will Grigg managing just six goals each last season.

McNulty could be the answer. The striker was lethal for Coventry City in the 2017/18 campaign, scoring 26 times, and looked sharp on loan at Hibernian in the second half of last season, finding the net seven times.

Clearly, the Sunderland fans have not forgotten about Mannone’s four years of service for the club and many of them were quick to heap praise on the goalkeeper in response to his message.
