Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has claimed that Kiko Casilla has been helping 20-year-old goalkeeper Illan Meslier during his suspension.

The Spaniard is currently serving an eight-game ban after he was found guilty of using racially abusive language by the FA.

His absence has allowed Meslier, who joined on loan from Ligue 2 side Lorient in the summer, to step up to the first team.

Speaking to Spanish news agency EFE, Orta revealed that Casilla had been helping the Frenchman.

He said (via Eurosport): "I am also very proud because with all the adversities he has suffered, he is still mentally very strong and helping a lot. Even with the current situation, he is helping Meslier (Illan), the young goalkeeper, after the sanction received."

Meslier has impressed in his three senior appearances so far, which hints at a potential selection headache for Marcelo Bielsa when both men are available.

Leeds are top of the table and have conceded the fewest goals in the division this season but Casilla's has put in some questionable performances along the way.

The Spaniard has made some costly mistakes this term and it has been suggested that his days at Elland Road could be numbered.

Meslier, on the other hand, looks as though he could be at the Yorkshire club for some time. Leeds have the option to buy the 20-year-old permanently in the summer for a fee in the region of £5 million.

The Verdict

It's great to hear that Casilla is advising the 20-year-old during his time in the first team.

The Spaniard is a hugely experienced goalkeeper and just the sort of person Meslier needs to help his development.

It is going to be very interesting to see how the Whites address their goalkeeper situation, particularly if they're preparing for a season in the Premier League.
