Leeds United forward Tyler Roberts has revealed his difficulties during the current pandemic, and the nationwide lockdown.

The 21-year-old has been a sporadic member of the Leeds first-team this season. He's featured 14 times in the Championship and has three goals to his name - two of them coming in the 4-0 win at Hull in February.

But Roberts, nor any footballer in the UK has featured in over a month now, and the stress of the pandemic, and the subsequent lockdown, is effecting millions of people.

Speaking to the Mail Online, Roberts outlined his distress during this lockdown, and the pain of not knowing when he'll be able to play for Leeds United again:

“This period that we are in has tested me in ways I never thought I would encounter," he explained. “The uncertainty of when the league will start again and the amount of training time we will get before games."

The proposed plan by the EFL is to finish the Championship season within a 56 day time-frame of restarting it - that means playing two games a week, and then seeing out the play-offs.

But there's no set date that footballers nor fans can look forward to.

"The hardest thing for me as a footballer is working towards an unclear goal or the time we are allowed back training," Roberts said.

“At Leeds, we are currently top of the league and eager to finish the season because we know we can make history and it's in our hands so that is a big motivation for me every day."

Marcelo Bielsa has his side on the brink of one of British football's most anticipated feats, with a point lead over 2nd-place West Brom and a seven point lead over Fulham in 3rd.

Leeds have waited a long time to be in this position, and at this stage of the season, but the outbreak has put teams in positions they could never have imagined, and the season resume will bring about a lot of pressure to finish it in good time.

“Making sure when we get the all-clear to come back, and that I'm in the best possible condition I can be to help the team cross that all-important finishing line," is Roberts' aim for the coming weeks and months, but how long he'll be preparing for is yet to be seen.

The verdict

These are truly challenging times for everyone. Football looks like an industry set to suffer huge and wide-ranging impacts from the outbreak, but the immediate goal is to finish this current season, set a date in which it needs to be done by, and look forward to having the football back on our screens.
